Summer Mantel

Well hello! and welcome to a new day and new post!

I had been searching for some cute summery ideas for my fireplace mantel (that isn’t really a fireplace) and came up with a cute idea for some old jars I had stashed.   This project literally costs a few dollars and is mucho easy to do.  The results are kinda cute, too!

All you need is:

  • glue gun
  • rope or twine from hardware store or craft store.  I got mine from Ace Hardware.
  • some cleaned out, previously used glass jars
  • tough fingers to withstand glue-gun burns.  (Oh wait,  that last one was for me.)

First take your rope and glue it onto the back of your jar.  From there, all you have to do is wrap the rope around the jar, using a line of glue as you go.  Make sure you press down on the rope to the glue as you go along.  Be careful,  this is were my fingers got in the way. ( Now that I have no fingerprints left, no one will be able to identify me.)  Just jokin’!

Ummmmmm……that’s it!  How the heck easy is that?

Mine needed a little something-something so I added some colorful string and doo-dads I had laying around from previous projects.  I had my son spray-paint the pickle jar lid black and that was a hit with him!  A 10 year old boy and spray-paint?  Jack pot!

Then I had to find a place for the jars…enter the mantel!

We don’t really have a fireplace in our house, but I really want one.  I hunted estate sales, garage sales, antique stores for an affordable mantel and I’d come up empty-handed every time.  Too expensive, too big, too expensive….

One summer we were vacationing at the Jersey Shore (but not the obnoxious Jersey Shore on MTV.  The lovely, real Jersey Shore of my husband’s childhood.)  I love to go to the Antique Center in Red Bank and get lost in all the musty, old buildings.  You never know what treasures you will find in a hot, musty antique store.

Anyhoo, I came across one that was neither too expensive, nor too big and I bought it!  Imagine my husband’s surprise when I showed it to him!  After all, we had to drive 800 miles back home with children, large dog, luggage, giant cooler for snacks,  and now a fireplace mantel!  I convinced him we/I had to have it since it was reported to come from a summer home on Cape Cod and we had spent our first anniversary on Cape Cod, so of course, this was a sign.  He didn’t believe me, but that’s OK because the mantel came home with us anyway.

I LOVE IT!  When people come to visit, they look curiously and say, “Is that a real fireplace?”  And it’s not anchored to the wall because I like to move it around my house, so every so often one of the kids will knock it down while playing ninja, or tag, or ball, or hockey, or whatever in the house.

I’m sure I can’t be the only one out there with a fake fireplace/real mantel…

Anyone, anyone?  Bueller?  Bueller?

Enjoy, and have a blessed day!
